Market a book before writing it?

I have read that before writing a book you have to implement a marketing plan. What if you do not know what direction the story will go? Sometimes a story veers off the path that you had outlined beforehand. So how do I market something if  I do not know what it will ultimately be? Any ideas of what I should do? Comment me.
